3am-The Album-Track by Track-3am

3AM was always going to be the title track. It was always one of the most popular of my songs when I played it live. The tune, which I wrote first as is the case with most of my songs, evolved from a couple of previous instrumentals namely Push1 and Push2 which eventually became the title music to my Is This Thing On Independent Music Podcast .

The lyrics sketch a tale of a relationship that should have ended years before it did with our hero deciding that the time has come to leave. He makes his decision based on a story  he has read in a Sunday supplement about a tropical island “You’ll see my destination written in a magazine”.

I had a very vivid picture of the home that he was leaving, a flat in Walton-On-Thames in Surrey near to where I grew up.

This is a picture of the flats

With regard to the arrangement and production of this track and indeed the album, I went to Toby at Zanzibar Facility, with a clear mind.

The demo I had emailed him  gave him an idea but I told him that I really wanted beats and a contemporary feel to it. The aim was for the track and the album to have a modern feel and not the usual singer/songwriter/acoustic guitar generic sound.

Toby got to work working out the beats and writing a piano type intro that I think creates a great atmosphere from the start. I went on to add bass (my beloved Wal ) some extra 12string finger picking guitar and some backing vocals. The finger cymbals, again supplied by Toby, beautifully punctuate the track.

As part of a deal I did with Future Perfect Pictures, which I will go into at a later date, Jackie Clarke produced an amazing music vide of 3AM that you can see here

3 am

Its 3 am and you’re not home

Gonna pack my bags I’m gone

You’ll see my destination written in a magazine

Its 3 am rain’s coming down

Got the water on the ground

Beneath my feet as I walk calmly out of town

Its 3 am the stars are out

I hear the taxi driver’s shout

I check my phone, I got my keys and a little cash

The streets are cold and I’m so alone

My head is heavy, I’m a little stoned

I leave with nothing but my soul and some dignity

ch

Heaven take me you’ll never break me

Heaven take me

Heaven take me you’ll never break me

Heaven take me

Had the good times and you threw them all away

You just don’t even care

Time’s a wasting but time’s a fool

I’m never going back, never going back there

Its 3 am and you’re not home

Gonna pack my bags I’m gone

You’ll see my destination written in a magazine

Its 3 am and you’re not home

Heard my message on the phone

That’s the last time you you’ll hear from me

ch

Heaven take me you’ll never break me

Heaven take me

Heaven take me you’ll never break me

Heaven take me

Heaven, heaven, heaven a little bit of heaven

Heaven, heaven, heaven a little bit of heaven

And the rain is coming down (ad lib)

It’s 3 am and no one’s home
