I wanted to write a post about my new found passion for running. I noticed that I had already started writing about this back in January and this is what I had written.
“I’ve been working hard keeping up my New Year’s Resolutions. I put on a bit of weight over Xmas and decided to up my exercise routine and keep an eye on my diet. I am doing the “Couch to 5K” plan. It’s an app that trains you, over the course of 9 weeks, to run 5 kilometres. I’m on week 4 and actually starting to enjoy running! When I’m not running I am hitting the gym. I’m hoping to be as “fit as a flea” by the summer.”
Well the good news is that I actually finished the whole 9 weeks of training and have been running 5 kilometres 3 to 4 times a week and have started ramping it up to 6k! It’s a great app that takes you from 60 second runs with 90 second walks through to 28 minutes runs. You don’t have to think as all the steps are worked out for you with someone* telling you when to run and when to walk. All you have to do is follow the instructions. This has had an amazing effect on my life as not only am I feeling fitter I am also watching what I eat as I have to maintain my energy levels for these runs. I had a dreadful run last Monday. I felt heavy, had hardy any energy and only managed a meagre 4 k. I looked at what I had eaten on the Sunday and worked out that I had not eaten well so stocked up on good fresh vegetables and fresh fish. Wednesday I was back in the game! Back to 6 k with loads of energy.
Dressing well helps, making sure I am wrapped up warm and looking as ridiculous as possible. I have run in the rain and the snow as well as the tiny bit of sunshine we had a few weeks ago!.
Music is also essential. I have experimented with various earphones and have found these beauties to be the best sounding. I opted for the bluetooth version and they work a treat! Click here to go to the Gizmodern website top tip Email them and you might get a money off voucher!
I have a personal Spotify playlist that I am constantly adding to. Feel free to share it.
To track my progress I use the Endomondo app on my phone. I started with the free version but upgraded when I had completed the couch to 5k as the extra features look good. This is a screen shot of one of my runs. Click here for the Endomondo site
When I completed the couch to 5k course, I treated myself to a fancy new pair of running shoes and bought these French Fancies from Alton Sports in Eastleigh. They are an absolute joy to run in!
So I am all set for the summer! I have Festival Gigs and my summer Tour to announce in the next few weeks so make sure you are signed up to my mailing list or keep an eye out on on my Tourdates on Bandsintown. I have some exciting MAINSTAGE news coming very soon!
Finally I must thank Jo Whiley. Hers was the voice I chose to be my encouragement and support for the couch to 5k app. There were other choices I could have made but when she says “I’ll see you next week….. it’s a date” You make sure you turn up….
